Pumpulikirkko

This is one of the most impressive locations in Rautavaara! Konttimäki’s parking area is located about 1,3 kilometers from the Pumpulikirkko. The route has been improved during the summer of 2022, including the construction of new duckboards. Starting from June 1, 2023, Pumpulikirkko became a part of the Tiilikkajärvi National Park.
Pumpulikirkko is a rock formation sculpted by ice-age within the Old Growth Forest Conservation Area. This steep-walled, gorge-like crevice, formed millions of years ago, expands into a clearing surrounded by vertical rock walls.
On the western wall of the square, there is a large giant’s kettle, eroded by the melting waters towards the end of the Ice Age (approximately 10,000 years ago). One side of it has cracked open in such a way that it’s possible to inspect the giant’s kettle from the inside.
The nature along the trail is lush and diverse. The soundscape rewards hikers; during the summer, birds hold their concerts, and streams add liveliness with their babbling. The acoustics at Pumpulikirkko are so good that there have even been choir performances there at times. Snow cover lingers in shaded hollows well into late spring, even reaching early summer.
The trail is partially challenging, but the majestic views at the destination reward the effort. True to its name, Pumpulikirkko has also served as a venue for religious ceremonies, having witnessed the union of several wedding couples.
The terrain is at times quite damp and rocky, so rubber boots or sturdy hiking footwear are essential on the trail.
